Chicago Seeks Damages in Fire Truck Crash
By homer346 - Thursday 07 August 2008 - 16:11:42
The City of Chicago filed suit Tuesday seeking to recover more than $350,000 from a company whose bus was involved in a crash that killed a veteran Chicago firefighter.

The suit seeks to recover the costs of a firetruck, repairs to a light pole and other costs from the crash in March 2007. A school bus driven by Darlene Lewis slammed into a firetruck on its way to an emergency, killing firefighter William Grant, 44.

The Alltown Bus Service school bus clipped the back of the firetruck, sending it spinning out of control at 59th and Wells Streets, authorities said at the time. Grant was crushed beneath the wreckage, witnesses said.

Police cited Lewis for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. She was also named in the lawsuit.

Blue Lake Fire Chief Off the Hook
By homer346 - Tuesday 04 March 2008 - 08:59:44
LYNN MOORE
Muskegon Chronicle (Michigan)

BLUE LAKE TOWNSHIP -- Blue Lake officials have lifted a reprimand they issued to the township fire chief for failing to ensure that all firefighters were properly licensed.
The Blue Lake Township board this month removed the disciplinary action from Fire Chief Kim Busman's personnel file. The written reprimand had been given to Busman last April after it was discovered that former fire Capt. Steven Holke's emergency medical technician license had expired in September 2005.The lapsed license prompted the Muskegon County Medical Control Authority last June to place the fire department on probation for one year. An investigation by the authority determined Holke had treated patients while not licensed, something Holke had denied. Last year, it was the opinion of the township board that it was Busman's responsibility to ensure all firefighters were properly licensed and that he should be disciplined for failing to do so.At the time the board issued the reprimand to Busman, it also disbanded a township fire committee that had discovered the licensing problem. "It's been taken out of his record," Township Supervisor Don Studaven said of Busman's disciplinary action. "We thought he'd been on it long enough."Holke resigned from the fire department last year. Busman could not be reached for comment.Deputy Fire Chief Dave Berndt had asked the board to expunge the disciplinary action against Busman. In his letter to the board, Berndt implied that Busman never deserved the reprimand, calling it the result of "unfounded" accusations from a fire committee member with a "personal vendetta.""The ruling against Chief Busman was made in reference to Ordinance #24 which stated that one of the chief's responsibility (sic) is to ensure proper training of all fire dept (sic) personnel," Berndt wrote. "Chief Busman has always fulfilled this responsibility right from the very beginning of his appointment as Fire Chief." He later wrote that Busman took proper steps "as soon as he found out about" Holke's lack of a license. The medical control authority, along with the state of Michigan, conducted an investigation into Holke and the department. The fire department was required to maintain a list and current license and certification documents of all emergency responders. When it determined Holke treated patients when he was unlicensed, the medical control authority permanently banned Holke from serving as an emergency medical technician or medical first responder in the county. As part of the fire department's probation, the medical control authority will closely monitor its medical controls.

Studaven said Berndt now is responsible for ensuring fire department staff are properly licensed, and that Berndt and Busman provide regular reports to the township board. The department does not have full-time employees, but rather is staffed by on-call firefighters.

In February, Berndt and Busman requested -- and the board approved -- letters of dismissal be sent to firefighters who hadn't participated in duties and training, Studaven said. "I think they are doing more than they have to," Studaven said. "They don't want to be caught short."
